working with numbers to the millions and decimals to the
thousandths place. Students solve equations and complex real-world

Math in Focus offers the authentic Singapore math
pedagogy with fewer topics taught in greater depth at each grade
level. The program features visual representations and modeling
strategies to solve complex problems; a consistent
concrete-pictorial-abstract progression; and strong development of
both conceptual understanding, place value, and computational
fluency so students that understand the “how” as well as the
“why.”
It answers the call for a coherent sequence of topics
giving students time to master foundational topics, so that little
repetition is required the next year. Thus, each grade level covers
fewer topics but in more depth, and you won't find all topics in
every grade level. The well-articulated sequence in Singapore Math
is intrinsic to the program pedagogy.
When a topic appears to be "missing," you can be assured that it
is found in either an earlier or later grade level. For example,
you will find calendar concepts in Grades K and 1, but these skills
will not be repeated in Grade 2.
Because Math in Focus does not repeat topics year after
year, students who use it advance faster than students who use
other programs. As a result, you may find topics that seem to be
"too advanced." However, you will find that your students are able
to handle the challenge as long as they have had the appropriate
preliminary instruction.
